What Can You Do?
Our Regional Water Situation
San Miguel de Allende and the Upper Río Laja Watershed are experiencing a severe water crisis.
The groundwater, relied upon by over 2,800 communities, is depleting rapidly—by as much as 7 feet (~0.5 - 2 meters) annually. Much of the remaining water supply is contaminated with high levels of arsenic and fluoride, causing significant health issues. These include dental and skeletal fluorosis, chronic kidney disease, developmental and learning problems in children, and various cancers. Children are particularly vulnerable as their developing bodies absorb these harmful substances more readily.
Caminos de Agua is a nonprofit organization that ensures access to clean drinking water through an effective, community-driven approach. Our initiatives currently provide clean water to over 50,000 people in the Upper Río Laja Watershed and across Mexico.
