Summer Course 2017: Sustainable Technologies in Action

Twelve engineers, development professionals, and students joined our two-week summer course - 2017 Sustainable Technologies in Action - this year.

In its fourth edition, the course grew out of CATIS Mexico’s vision to connect others to a broad array of sustainable technologies. While we have sharpened our focus on water solutions, we maintained our commitment to inspiring the next generation of changemakers in environmental solution seekers by partnering with IRRI Mexico on this summer course. The two-week course challenges participants to create their own solutions for more sustainable communities in rural, peri-urban, and urban contexts using a unique mix of theoretical and practical components.

This year’s course featured a curriculum highlighting diverse technologies in action: solar, biogas, water filtration, and others. One new change was an increased focus on project design and creation. Additionally, this year’s edition of our summer course used three distinct case studies, each representing real communities featured in the course’s field trips. Participants worked in small groups to present solutions for a case study of their choice at the end of the course. The presentations were given to a panel of professionals with diverse life experiences in these sustainable technologies.

Participants reported “amazement in seeing real experiences in action”, “life-changing experiences”, and “fascination in seeing how solutions I’ve studied actually work on the ground.” Jennifer Ungemach, project coordinator, shares that “Coordinating these types of experiences can be exhausting, but it’s always worth it in the end. It’s our chance to showcase successes (and failures) and challenge others to make a difference!”
