WHO SHOULD APPLY FOR THE COURSE?

Course participants have a wide range of backgrounds and nationalities.  Professionals and students in the engineering and design fields, environmental sciences, non-governmental organization management, and other backgrounds have participated in the past. Or a passion about Mexico and Latin America and/or sustainability may spark your interest to participate. All participants are driven by a sincere interest to understand how sustainability, technology, culture and context intersect and are excited to explore Mexico.

WHAT DOES THE COURSE COST INCLUDE?

The course cost includes lodging, most meals, workshops and presentations, and transportation once in Mexico (flights to and from Mexico aren't included). We also include some tourist excursions such as visits to Teotihuacan pyramids and the famous Xochimilco canals in Mexico City.

WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE COURSE COST?

  • Flights to and from Mexico 
  • Health and travel insurance
  • Meals on weekends and during free time
  • Visa (if needed)

WHAT parts of mexico will i see?

The course components take place in Mexico City, and Queretaro, Txcala, and Guanajuato states (San Miguel de Allende). Participants stay in  Mexico City for the first part of the course and then travel to San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato. Visits showcase urban, periurban and rural examples. Cultural visits include the Teotihuacan pyramids and the Xochimilco canals. There is free time for participants to explore on their own according to their specific interests.  You may choose to extend your time in Mexico before or after the course to explore the vast country.

what is the cost in my home currency?

The course cost is $1975 USD. Check online currency calculators for exchange rates. Exchange rate at time of payment applies. Course cost is approximately 1300 GBP  /1840 euros/ 32,000 pesos.

are there scholarships available?

CATIS Mexico and IRRI Mexico do offer a limited amount of scholarships, prioritizing national applicants in work-study programs. Past participants have found funding from their places of employment and universities.

DO I NEED A VISA?

Visa requirements vary by country. Please see this site to see the requirements for your country.

IS MEXICO SAFE?

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

 Accomodations are simple shared bedrooms, such as the HostelInn in San Miguel de Allende.

WHAT SHOULD I PACK?

Accepted participants receive a pre-departure packet which includes packing information and more detailed information. 

How do I pay for the course? 

Upon acceptance, payment is generally made through the CATIS Mexico Paypal account. Paypal converts multiple currencies to US dollars from your home currency. Direct bank transfers can be arranged but fees tend to be higher. 

WHAT LANGUAGE WILL BE USED IN THE COURSES? DO I NEED TO KNOW SPANISH?

The course language is English. Course coordinators translate to English for presenters when necessary (many give their course component in English) and provide language support when needed. Spanish is not necessary though this is a great opportunity to practice your Spanish or arrive early for a Spanish intensive course!

WHAT HAPPENS IF I HAVE AN EMERGENCY?

Emergency contact numbers are provided to all participants to share with families. Course coordinators will take appropiate actions in conjunction with the participant and family. If a participant has an emergency (accident, illness, etc) while in Mexico, course coordinators are prepared to interact with the appropriate actors.

WHAT IF I GET SICK?

Course coordinators are familiar with the health services available and provide translation and support as needed. Course participants are required to have travel/healthcare insurance.
